Verbot 5 Now Available The Verbot Team released Verbot 5 Standard Edition for free.
Here are some of the changes since Ver 4:
Upgraded to Microsoft .NET 2.0 Change the agent's voice, pitch, and speed Print KnowledgeBase to a text file New "learn" command allows the Verbot to learn through dialog Added many built in variables Create KnowledgeBases based on Comma Separated Value (CSV) files Auto-read clipboard Send input from command line parameters Added an embedded load command to load KnowledgeBases dynamically Added a Scheduler that can remind you of important events Added C# Enabled Code and Conditions Get list of TTS Voices Installed
There are a few things you can't do with Alice that you can easily do with Verbot unless you Bot is hosted by Pandora or simular site or happen to use one of the Bots that offer these functions. Such as Rebecca and Aiml Pad. That would be to launch command level programs directly, launch internet searches, and run C# scripts from your Desktop or Web Hosted Bot's Knowledgebase. There are to many other functions to mention here. http://www.verbots.com/index.php The only time you have to pay a monthly fee is if you want your Bot hosted on their server. |

I recognize the "learn" and "unlearn" functions from the human mind map project. Perhaps they will pick up some of the other functions in the future, like "remember" and "forget". |

I have installed the Verbot Standard Edition on my PC and I'm very impressed.
I particularly appreciate the option to use the same knowledge base both in the PC based software and in the online service. That's the main reason I'm going to use it for my next projects.
On my pc I use Guile 3d's Nicole as character, which in the free version contains several nice animations. I would like to use it also on some online chatbots, but I must first solve a couple of issues.
If someone is interested please visit my post on their forum:

I suppose that the animations in Verbot Online are just sequences of images. The ugly characters supplied by Conversive (in my opinion they are really awful, except for Julia, who is just acceptable) display a rather "out-of-sync lip-sync" animation, based on sequences of small images.
Even a small and almost static Nicole would be a great leap forward compared to the default characters.

Did you manage to get anywhere with this?
It's not easy as the online side of Verbot doesn't have so much activity on the forum.
I'm soon going to start using it more myself (so far I've really only been experimenting with the desktop version which I know quite well).
I tend to find on the Verbot forum that it is not always easy to get things noticed, but once they are normally the response from Matt / Aaron is very useful. I imagine the kind of thing you want to do with it will also be of benefit to Verbot.
I agree the online characters are not great. Although I've never used it, I see there is the option to use a Conversive Character Studio character. Just followed a few of the links and seems to be a free download.

Hi, MikeA
I've got no answers on that forum.
The Character Studio is free; I downloaded it some week ago and it works fine. Guile 3d's Nicole is available in this format and is really great. You can easily customize facial expressions and other behaviours of the character. The issue is just that when I upload these characters on the online version, they don't work.
I also noticed that the online version often offers slow response times and sometimes the TTS does not work. 30 US$/year for a character with AI engine and TTS, without any limit in the number of audio streams is a very competitive price, if compared with Mediasemantics and SitePal, but the quality of the characters and of the overall service seems to be lower too.
The desktop version, on the contrary, has a good and easily customizable knowledge base engine and can use the graphically excellent characters created by Character Studio. It also includes a teaching mode which allows you to teach your bot during conversation. In the knowledge base you can even add commands (like opening a web page) in the answers, and this option works also when the knowledge base is uploaded to the online verbot.

I realise you know what you are doing ... so excuse me if this sounds silly... but could it be affected by the hosting for the images?
I work with different hosting quite a lot and I've seen the considerable differences between good and bad. If you want to put that to the test, I have access to very good US or UK hosting that you could test with. |

Thank you for your advice, Mike. I will check this aspect too.
However, I use a dedicated web server which hosts a dozen different web sites, all of them include images and I have never had any problem of this kind.
Anyway, it is just an experiment. Given this issue, the overall poor performances and the lack of an Italian TTS, I will hold this project for some more time or choose a different technology.
