Hunted in reality, jihadists are turning to artificial online worlds such as Second Life to train and recruit members

That's a very bizarre story - if it was April I would have thought it was an April Fool joke. How can people die in SL ? So far I don't see anything like health statistics or damage indicators.

I wonder why they just don't ban guns and bombs and restrict the coding to stop it affecting people's models if that is what is happening.

Unless a each peice of land has the safe (no damage) box
checked for it in it's property settings then anything
and everything on that land can suffer damage, avatars
can be torn apart and buildings and other objects blown up.
Most commercial land and residential areas have that box
checked by default, but some people choose to turn it off.
I have noticed that some people stage and indulge in RPG
type war games in SL. I have no idea why it is tolerated,
except that it would cause Linden Labs to lose some members
who view SL as just another gaming environment.

I suspect that the reference is to a recruiting ground, a source of potential recruits. It can also be a place where information as to how to commit mahem in the real world is annonously dispersed. For some people it is a very small step from a feeling of power in virtual reality to the desire to try it in physical reality. Suicide bombers are a vivid example. In that case virtual reality is the mind.

But Tom, Second Life IS an RPG.

I agree Jim, it is an RPG in regards to its graphics and how
the interface is set up, and of course the fact that members set
up a game type alter ego to use there, but after that it is really
more than just another RPG game. There are real people and companies
which do business there on a daily basis, and the Linden Exchange is
tied to and has a listing on the NYSE. I found that there are real
world real estate companies and stock brokerage firms which conduct
some of their real world trancsactions through offices set up in SL.

In fact, I am setting up on the land I purchased, a virtual office
and showroom for my Character Creation & DesignWorks Studio along
with a small living area. My one PC will have SL running about 75%
of the time.

Thanks for those insights. It does seem like Linden Labs could prevent some of the abuse quite easily. Like it has been said though, you probably can't stop all of the bad stuff. Of course this will lead to policing in SL, that has to be the future. Again the rotten apples spoil it for the rest of us.
