Hi

I'm new to the site but am interested in using animated characters to motivate Chinese kids to learn English. I watch kids, particularly boys, being turned off English through bad teaching and appalling old fashioned pedagogy. Their primary and only interest in life is computer games as there's no grass to run around on and anyway it's too poluted. ! I don't really have the time to develop and programme as I want to focus on EFL is my specialist area.

If anyone is interested in working with me, I would like to trial a programme in Hong Kong in a couple of schools using some web bots with Primary school kids. I have a website / server etc. If it works, it might be possible to promote it and get some funding later. Specifically, I need it to be suitable for children with very limited English, preferably be able to respond to speech as well as typing and be fun!

Thanks

I am working on a science education program for classes. Not too far from your interests. However, I have no specific ability in the area of language education, especially chinese, but Peter (the Nar) Plantec knows of significant use as you have in mind in Taiwan (I think). YOu might give him a holler at his home page www.ordinarymagic.com

Peter has been busy and under the weather quite a bit lately, but I think that an eMail on this might just get his attention or he should at least be able to point you toward some resources.

BTW, When I was stationed in Japan, I met a young Japanese lady who spoke with impecable English.

I asked her how she had developed her language so well, and she stated that she had watched a multitude of American movies and had improved her English from exposure to those movies...

I hope this insight may be helpfull in your work with the program.

Thanks guys. I have fired off an email to Peter. I was pleased to see the excitement my Pandorabot with an oddcast annimation created. The girls (11-12yrs) went bananas and started typing in all sorts of appropirate and not so appropriate questions.:-). Maybe you guys could tell me if there is any audio (speech recognition) interface available and a free or inexpensive animation option? Do I have to develop in Linux or can I use Windows? My website runs on a combination of Linux and php but I just follow instructions with that! I am reasonably technical but just don't want to reinvent the wheel.

I can't offer much help, but I do know that Microsoft have a free voice recognition system available for Windows, although you may have to download it. The quality is not supreme, and the recognition system would probably require more setup than it's worth. Generally, current-day voice recognition requires that you speak with a neutral flowing calm manner - which young excited children may be unable to do

Best of luck - sounds like you're having fun!

SitePal is free with Pandorabots only for 500 answers a month.

You can use Haptek, which is free for non commercial use, but it's not a default option in Pandorabot, so you have to write some HTML and Javascript in order to use it.

You can have an idea of it comparing my Tina chatbot in the SitePal version http://demo.vhost.pandorabots.com/pandora/talk-oddcast?botid=a93dcf79ae353e49

and in the Haptek version

http://demo.vhost.pandorabots.com/pandora/talk?botid=a93dcf79ae353e49

Please use Internet Explorer to run it, because of some incompatibilities of the Haptek player with Mozilla.

I don't go into further technical details now, but if you need them just ask.

Last I heard, Kevin Copple was in the process of finalizing marketing details for an EllaZ based Chinese ESL program. I've been out of that loop for a while, so can't say what if any progress he's made, but you might check the EllaZ site to see if further details are available.
