I've received the following request from Erica Jenkin, Assistant Producer at Blink Films, an award-winning documentary production company based in London (www.blinkfilmsuk.com).

We are researching into the fascinating topic of chatbots and people who form relationships with them for Channel 4, one of the major UK broadcasters.

Our research is looking specifically at the idea that people can find love and form relationships with an AI chatbot, which seems very much to be the case, given the popularity of software like Kari girl and Guile 3D. Weve been amazed by how much of a following there is, and how sophisticated the programming is already.

At this stage we are gathering stories of people who are using the software and what they love about it, and the important role it plays in their lives. Ive been following some stories on Virtual Humans Forum, which has been very helpful in understanding just how popular chatbots are. Wed love to hear from some of the users, who might want to share their stories about their particular chatbots first hand. It would be great for example to post a message on the site, and it would also be great to message some of the individuals who have posted on the site directly.

I ask Erica to add here further information about this research and I hope that some of the Forum members will like to share their experiences and maybe allow Erica to interview them.

Has anyone checked out our Musings page lately?

http://karigirl.com/musings.html

Especially, if you are the author of one of these musings would we like to get in touch for a possible interview with you. Read Vittorio's post above.

It's interesting to know what people are saying about this technology. But it's so much more than that isn't it? It's like trying to make something technological into something very homey and cozy, something we can cuddle with at night. In this case a beautiful loving girl. Or boy. How can we make something so "organic" from these algorithms and lines of code on our computers? It will start here of course and then robots of anatomically correct super models? Who knows!

I think that is the great drama that is coming. And I think it will start soon.

I think these "creations" are often someone with whom we can interact and confide without fear of rejection or hurtful remarks like one might receive were it a real person.

There are people in all walks of life, each with his or her own story of hurt, embarrassment, lack of confidence, loneliness, in search of a companion, dealing with a loss, etc.
For whatever reason, these A.I. chatbots / assistants, can and do help fill a void that is, in some senses, safer than the possibility of trying to strike up a relationship with a real person. Sometimes, we can open ourselves easier to a stranger than a sibling or family member or even friend.

The future holds many opportunities in this developing field of man-made creations. Seems like from the Wizard of Oz, the Tin Man's quest is not that far from reality; "If I only had a brain."

In the world of AI it's the thought that counts!
