Hello all. The past several months has seen a steady improvement in each of the Media Semantics plug-and-play Flash character styles, particularly the realistic 3d characters, which are gaining emotions, improved idle actions, and more. Look forward to a completely revamped "full body" and "bust" line with improved hand gesture actions.

What's particularly exciting from the point of view of technology enthusiasts is that the Character Builder and Character Server represents a very open and flexible framework for building solutions in the virtual humans space.

The software is really designed for non-animators, but if you are a 3d enthusiast then you will be interested to know that the new Extensibility Kit includes source files in Adobe Illustrator and Poser format that let you rapidly build your own characters. You start with a base model, e.g. "Bare Jessi", and then add clothing, hair, textures, etc. Then you render your creation out over night. The software automatically processes the results of the renders to create a plug-and-play character, that, with the right software, knows how to talk, look around, display emotions, use hand gestures, etc. You can use the character royalty-free or even resell it.

You can use such a character with the Character Builder to create "static" Flash swf files, including characters that greet users to a web site or present a Powerpoint slideshow, but also characters that interact with users using simple forms or quizzes.

You can also use your character with the Character Server to create applications in which flash files are generated dynamically, on a per-user basis. You can use the Server's built-in AIML parser to add some custom intelligence, or you can use its publishing capabilities to create your own virtual-human based services.

Very nice.

This seems to be oriented at bringing avatars to the masses which is something that is very important to the spread of Virtual Humans throughout the business community.

Auto character creation from a customizable model in the hands of a medium savy business person can be utilized in ways that we have not yet thought of.
