As you know, this Forum is built upon the free Snitz Forums 2000 software. I'd like to thank all the people working on Snitz software, since they constantly upgrade it to fix bugs and to apply security patches.

A new version (3.4.06) has been released a couple of weeks ago.

I constantly keep our Forum software up to date with all the known bug fixes and security patches. However, this is a good opportunity to have everything updated. This version also includes some minor functional enhancement, as you can read below (for further info please see http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=62763).

In the past months I have also installed the following MODs (changes to the standard Snitz software, which allow further functions and customizations):

  • Spell checker

  • Active Users

  • Color Themes

  • Avatars

  • AntiSpam

  • Other customizations

I have now to apply the same changes to the new release, which is a tedious job, prone to errors, since I must edit manually each program, copy and paste the code in the right position and test again everything. Unfortunately there is no automatic way to do it (some enterprise softwares, like SAP, offer tecniques which allow to keep track of the changes and help in this process, but their cost is in the million dollar range )

When all the work is done and tested, I will have to shut down for some minutes the forum and run the upgrade. I will keep you informed here.

Here is a list of the security bugs fixed in this version:
* Fixed fake mail sending from pop_mail.asp. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=62748
* Fixed 'type' url variable cross-scripting bug. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=60011
* Fixed 'GROUP' variable not sanitized bug. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=62049
* Fixed 'PWKEY' variable handling in password.asp. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=60371

Bug fixes made in this version:
* Fixed MySQL DEFAULT value bug with auto_increment fields when upgrading from older forum versions.
* Fixed numerous requests to badwords table. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=58750
* Fixed ChiliASP errors in 'IsObjInstalled' function in admin_config_email.asp.
http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59050
* Fixed loop bug in admin_config_groupcats.asp. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59817
* Fixed table tags in admin_forums.asp. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=56955
* Fixed default value bug with MySQL 4 and greater. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=62496
* Fixed javascript bug associated with the URL tag button on the editor. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59366
* Fixed default value for auto_increment fields using MySQL database, during forum setup. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=52219
* Fixed badwords not fully masked bug. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=58394
* Fixed members using Norton Internet Security, that are unable to register. Policy.asp was moved to an included file called inc_policy.asp in register.asp. All links to policy.asp changed to register.asp.
* Fixed user name with quotes bug. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=53624
* Fixed quotes in members search being doubled http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=62638
* Fixed fake mail sending from pop_mail.asp. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=62748

Other changes or features added to this version:
* Improved loading time of post.asp and closed many recordset objects that were left open. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59903
* Added code to speed up loading of member names in combo boxes. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59903
* Added feature that brings you back to the topic or reply you just posted.
* Changed the default option to NOT use the drop down box when searching for posts by a member.
* Minimum characters allowed in admin user name is now set to 3.
* Replaced current birthday picker with Shaggy's birthday picker mod.
* Removed confirmation dialog when deleting a bad word.
* When logged in, user name now shows correct case as when you signed up. http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59054
* Added code to get real ip address of users that are behind a proxy.
* Added feature to allow subscription links to go to the last post in a topic without the REPLY_ID.

Vittorio I simply do now understand how you get it all done. I will send you my first million -- nope better make it the second because I promised Grant the first -- to get that SAP software stuff.

Thanks.

It was just a coincidence: I was checking the forum after the upgrade and I saw that the a new user, who had just registered, was looking at the members profiles.

This user had registered as based in New York but a quick search on his IP address revealed that he was really connecting from Cote D'Ivoire.

So I saw that he was accessing the Member function and was sequentially clicking on the profile of each member, probably in order to send some scam mail.

I immediately removed this member. However I suggest again to all the members to disable the "Allow Forum Members
to Send you E-Mail" option in your Profile
.

Well he got me because I just recieved his email via Virtual Humans Forum.

I really don't mind getting spam. Its a fact of life. I don't see why people make a big fuss out of it. Its called 'delete'.

He got me too Vittorio. But I agree with mikmoth, there is even a perverse pleasure in using the delete key without reading. "I'm smarter than you is are, I won't even bother reading, So take that!"

More seriously Vittorio. I appreciate your professional commitment but there are better things for you to be spending your time on. You are more valuable to us through your thoughts and contributions. Save the energy for those.

I'm not sure if he got me or not...

I have 2,041 UNREAD messages in my Inbox. I'm not kidding either.

I just glance down the page for subjects and senders that I recognize and click on those to read. The rest just eventually scroll off the page as newer eMails arive...

My Bulk/spam filter has only caught 300 besides the 2,041 in my inbox.

I've had to set up filters for high traffic mail lists though. wxWidgets for example has generated 13,591 messages that I am yet to read...

I don't tend to worry about the "extra" mail until it prevents me from spotting the mail that I do desire to read.

Vittorio,
I REALLY like the way the new forum software takes you directly to the new post once you post it. This prevents you from having to scroll down to it with the scroll wheel.

It is amazing hos such a simple difference can really enhance your experience.

Thanks for all your hard work and attention to those details that make this more fun for all of us.

This spam issue reminds me of the time that we recieved a phone call from a "tele-marketer" which I consider to be the spammers of the phone lines...

Marielle answered the phone which is cordless while she was making dinner and cleaning house and whatever else she happened to be multitasking with at the time.

Now, I may like to type/write, but Marielle likes to talk............

Marielle kept the telemarketter on the phone talking on and on and on and on, about whatever came to mind. All the while Marielle was working on doing the things that she was doing since the phone is chordless.

It only ended when the telemarketer finally asked Marielle if she could "please" hang up so they could call someone else and try to sell there wares. Marielle assured them that they could call back if they wanted to talk some more, and let the telemarketer off the hook by letting them hang up.

We haven't heard from that particular telemarketer since...

It's just one of the many reasons that I love her...

JOHN!!! Quit telling on me!!!

Although it is a true story.... I guess I learned from the best, my dad. He once kept a religious person for 2 1/2 hours at the front door while the rest of the religious group was waiting on the corner and were ready to leave. The next time this religious group came to our street they carefully avoided our house! Hmmm, I wonder why

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Bwahahahaha Nice one. That's especially effective since some companies have a policy that their workers may not hang up on a customer.

Another good trick is to show a genuine interest in the product, and then ask if they can hold for a minute - and just leave the phone off the hook and forget about it. If you're particularly evil you can pick it up every eight minutes or so and apologise for the delay.

If you have a couple of companies that send you junk with pre-paid envelopes, it can be fun to mail their advertising to each other....

Not that I ever do any of this, of course

I have a friend who begins to dicker with the sales person on the phone. Tries to sell them his old truck in exchange for what they are selling. Tells me he almost made it once.
