Nice article.

It seems to be mostly focused on the investment strategies in AI technologies, but I suppose that there does need to be financial backing or the AI will fail to grow...

Thanks for reading.

As you can probably see,i don't know much about AI, but came upon the topic in research for my SciFi investing series.

I have to admit that the future of AI and technology in general scare me a bit.

Anyway, thanks again.

Have you seen Caprica tv series? Or Terminator of course? Or the Borg?

These dreams of Ai can be scary but I think these movies serve like warnings to our future. Hopefully we can avoid the pitfalls of creating highly evolved Ai without falling into them... For example: Having our creation turn on us and kill us. We might want to avoid that one.

Milkmoth,

I am a big TNG fan, so i know the Borg and, of course, the terminator series. I have not checked out Caprica, though.

A side note to you point about us learning from all of the warnings in SciFi: The editors told me the original article was too focused on SciFi and philisophy. One of the paragraphs i removed was about how I used to wonder how people could work at a tech company because of what i felt like they were helping create ( Skynet if you will). However, through out the course of my research, i realized that they were reading more optimistic Scifi: Asimov, etc. and i was gravitating towards more pessimistic: Philip K Dick, etc.

I guess i just feel like we have name a mess of the world and can't be trusted.

In the future i will write about trans-humanism and that freaks me out even more.

Matt

I'm certain that there comes a time when, even though we (as a people or individuals) are creating or helping to create something that has far reaching implications, where we simply continue doing what we are doing because we have obligations, families, bills, etc., to support. I am certain that those scientists that helped assemble the Enola Gay or the first bomb or the Chinese that together created gunpowder many centuries ago, never realized the future use / misuse that their creations might have.
Sometimes we need the job / money instead of pondering over how said item might be used (tanks, missiles, projectiles, range finders, scopes, etc.). It is unfortunately, just the way things are in the grand scheme of things.

Hey Art! Most ideas like the atomic bomb where discovered/invented by free thinkers. People that can appreciate the Universe and its clock-work perfection. It's only when the greedy get a whif of what you've been working on that things go to hell.

Hey Matt! Yes, Caprica is just way cool. You have to watch it. I can't believe you've never seen Caprica. Must check out.

Transhumanism sounds way interesting. I would be lying if I said I would not like to experience immortality or being in wonderful-health. But... I personally think I'm Ok just being me. The journey is still complete.

I label myself as a cyberneticist - or like to. I am always thinking about new algorithms to make my computer smarter. Many of these things are like my babies. They are alive somehow. I think that's been the best part... creating life where it did not exist before. At least some new order of life.

Cya later.

Thanks for the great convo guys, great points all around.

Make sure to check out the first article in the Science Fiction Investing series: http://seekingalpha.com/article/867431-science-fiction-investing-part-1
It covers William Gibson's Neuromancer, Google's Project Glass (augmented reality headset), and our desire to be enveloped in the internet.

If it's all right with the Mods, I'd like to share the next articles in the series here (It will probably take 3 or 4 months before it is ready, though) As of now, the next one will be about robotics and the following one about bionics/transhumanism.

thanks again,
Matt

Matt,

Absolutely! Bring it on along with any other discussion, question or thought provoking concept you might have!

We are all friends here and while some of us walk our own paths I still think we sort of share a common thread. It is a thread that helps to hold us all together no matter how thin the fabric gets!! ;)

Be well!
