I think that the list of people in charge of Denise localization should be kept in this separate topic, so it's easier for Guile and everybody else to keep track of the current situation.

I will keep this first post updated according to the posts which will follow.

Guile, pleaase let me know the list of the languages you are interested in, so that I can add all them here.

I copy here the original request by Guile:

We are looking for people interested in localizing (translating to other languages) our Denise AI software interface.

This task consists in editing many .XML files in English with an editor we are building.

We estimated that one people can do this in a couple of hours, but this person would then become responsible to keep the files updated in this respective language according future releases and new features.

We are willing to give a free version of Denise for every people that help us on this task, but we will choose just one people for each different language.

If you'd like to participate on this, please send me an e-mail at guile3d@guile3d.com.br telling in what language you are native.

What's the point of having an interface in Greek for example, if the actual software can't support the language? I have a Greek TTS installed on my PC. Can I give queries in Greek or make Denish speak in Greek?

Besides translation the interface, users can build their own set of AIML commands in their own language for searching web, play songs and all other functions of the system using our API. This way, if you have a TTS voice and AIML sets in your language, Denise will understand and speak in any desired language. The features that will be missing will be the huge AI database in English that we build over these past years, as well as some real AI algorithms that perform natural language analysis to your questions, but these too can be adapted in future releases if we have help from native speakers.

For all our localization volunteers, we are planning to make our translation tool available in as soon as possible, so everyone will have enough time to work on that.

We have finally closed an agreement with a very good TTS vendor, but because of this we are having to update lots of code in Denise due to compatibility issues.

Thanks again for your help on this task.

Today we changed Denise from Beta to Release Candidate version. For the first time we could complete the full cycle, from purchase, download, installation and execution, and all went smoothly.

Message:

Guile,

I have started the localization work and I have some comments, which might prove useful for the next release of your Localization Tool:

  • In some cases , it would be useful to have some hint about the context in which the text is used.
For example, the English verb "talk" in Italian has different translations, according to its meaning in English as imperative ("parla") or infinite ("parlare").

  • Another aspect is that adjectives in English are the same for male or female nouns and for singular and plural: the same word "small" may then be translated as "piccola", "piccolo", "piccole" or "piccoli".

  • If I could install a beta version of Denise, I could test most of these situations and fix them before releasing the texts to you.

  • There are several sequences which are repeated almost identical (such as street, address, etc.), but they are scattered through the list. A sort function on the column might prove very handy.

  • I've used many times the Copy and Paste buttons, but the use of Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V would be much better...

  • In one of your previous posts, you said that "We estimated that one people can do this in a couple of hours". After more than 3 hours I am about at 25% of the whole work (it's just my guess, since the percentage bar at the bottom left always says 100%). I'm not complaining, of course, it's just to make it clear that it will take at least 12 hours to complete the job, and then I will surely reread and check everything before releasing it to you.

  • When starting my pc today, I see that your program is loaded automatically at startup. Considering that it's a program to be used only a few days, I would suggest to avoid this. Personally I've removed it from the startup list (if some translator doesn't know how to do it, please see http://www.geckoandfly.com/1904/how-to-disable-remove-windows-startup-programs-application/ )

I hope next week-end will be rainy, so I can spend more time to complete this job.

Vrossi has a good point, it's a problem that's common to all Latin languages, which have this silly notion that all nouns (and as such, most adjectives) must have a gender. So it's hard to know what gender to use in words like "high", "low", "small" etc. without knowing what they refer to.

Thanks Vitt for the comments. I will ask my team to enable the copy and paste.

My idea is sending you and to the other volunteers a full version of Denise to test the translation, so you can have the full text context from within the system to make the adjustments.

Sorry for the amount of work! What happened is that even I didn't realize the great number of text to translate, because by the time I invite the volunteers I didn't have all the interface converted to .xml files. I think Denise also grew up a lot these past months... I thought that my team wouldn't finish many optional modules for the first release, but they actually did finish! Still some advanced modules will become available only after the first release.

Denise's system happened to become real big! Just her SDK Manual for our custom AIML Tags is 100 pages big! And this is just one of the five manuals that will be available (User Manual, Kiosk Studio Manual, AIML Brain Editor Manual, AIML Custom Tags Manual and Text Editor Manual). Later on, my company will sure have to hire people to translate those to other languages.

Please feel free to work just what you think is fair! The free copy offer will still be up!

Thanks again,

Guile

Like allready commented, translate to a latin language is hard if you do not know the complete phrase where the word is used.

A question

1) If your system variables have been coded in English, how will the system speak the translated text? Or would it be something like that? "h mera einai (Greek) fourteen of November (English)"

Take your time Giannis. We can release Denise without all languages. We will be posting many updates after her initial release.

You will have to have a Greek text to speech engine to make Denise correctly speak the Greek text from her messages. We will offer many other TTS languages other than English soon.

Ciao Alex81,

Nel post http://www.vrconsulting.it/vhf/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1136 Guile ha spiegato che cosa si pu ottenere con la versione localizzata di Denise:

Besides translation the interface, users can build their own set of AIML commands in their own language for searching web, play songs and all other functions of the system using our API. This way, if you have a TTS voice and AIML sets in your language, Denise will understand and speak in any desired language. Per il TTS basta scaricare una buona voce come Silvia ( www.vrconsulting.it/denise/RSSolo4Italian.zip ) e poi impostarla come predefinita.

Purtroppo l'AIML in italiano esiste solo in una versione molto limitata, che puoi scaricare da qui: http://aitools.org/Free_AIML_sets

Thanks Vit,

Although users can already use Denise with the translated files, we do not recommend doing so right now, because when you choose a different language in Denise setup, she will try to load a TTS voice in the same language, and if the user don't have a voice, this can make Denise to crash. We still have to do some coding to avoid that.

That is why we didn't pack the translated xml's files with Denise yet.

Guile
