Hi
I am an illustrator and working on a project with a character vehicle. All my artwork up till now have been hand drawn/painted/cg
But I am looking at the next step of turning the character/s into 3D images and models.
I don't know where to start. Maybe out of my league as I have never used any 3D software. Anyone got any tips on any easy to use software? Not looking for scenes and backgrounds at the moment, just the main character.
Initially to have a 3D model created with the idea of a toy.
I need to supply the company with an STL file of my character.
Any free software available or do I have to spend big bucks?
Thanks

Well, I'm not a very good one to ask about software, cause I'm a little bitter a Haptek right now, but Haptek is the one for you.
If you only want to do heads. The rest is over the $100 mark and not worth it for you. People putty is only $50.

Hello Gary,

About having a 3D software, the two admired names are Blender http://www.blender.org/ and Wings3D http://www.wings3d.com/, which are available for free.

About ease of use, I would like to recommend you to try Wings3D. I find it really enjoyable using Wings3D for modeling purposes.

Blender is wonderful 3D application too, but it's user interface may seem a bit cryptic at first, although it's the best planned UI directed to fast workflow in industry standards, once you get the hang of it.

Otherwise, you may try other commercial 3D applications by their trial versions and see which one may fit to your choice.

But in my humble opinion, if modeling your only purpose, Wings3D could be a wonderful tool available for totally free. (As you see I am quite impressed with it after trying a whole lot of other applications :) )

Hope it helps.

Best regards

Tinman
